Explore Our Mission in Action

Supporting Pediatric Orthopedic Research and Education

CHORTHO Cares Inc supports pediatric orthopedic research by providing funding, mentorship, networking opportunities for medical students, residents, fellows, surgeons, and scientists.

This includes research into treatments, registries, and other areas that improve the care of children with orthopedic injuries and disorders. Our team consists of Board members, collaborating surgeons, scientists, medical students and volunteers. These individuals contribute through research and presentations. Current activities are conducted by our Principal Investigator, Clinical Research Coordinators, aspiring medical students, as well as Orthopedic Residents. Attending providers lead bi-monthly Journal Club meetings, offering a valuable educational experience for researchers, clinical staff, athletic trainers, physician assistants, mid-level providers and residents. Engaging with current literature during these meetings enhances understanding of study design and methodology, facilitates awareness of new guidelines, and supports the translation of evidence-based knowledge into improved patient care.

Supporting Surgical Skills Labs and Training Sessions

CHORTHO Cares Inc provides funding and organizational support for surgical skills labs to train current and future healthcare providers in pediatric orthopedic techniques.

Training sessions, including surgical skills labs, is provided by residents and fellows affiliated with programs such as JHACH, USF Orthopaedics, and HCA Largo Orthopaedics. Casting and splinting training is open to all interested medical professionals. We train residents from Sarasota Memorial Hospital ER, Tampa Family Practice, and Sports Medicine Fellows from Bayfront, BayCare, and Johns Hopkins All Children’s. Recipients of this funding are required to maintain attendance records and document specific instructional details for each class, including the types of splints or casts taught. This ensures that the funds are used directly for educational purposes as intended. We gratefully accept donations of medical supplies to support our casting classes and welcome offers of suitable venues for hosting these educational sessions.

Providing Care for Uninsured or Underinsured Patients

CHORTHO Cares Inc facilitates orthopedic care access for uninsured or underinsured patients through an application and approval process.

Care includes the diagnosis and treatment or management of orthopedic conditions, including surgeries, and post-treatment follow-ups. Care is provided by a network of volunteer and contracted healthcare professionals, all affiliated with recipient Children’s Orthopaedic and Scoliosis Surgery Associates, LLP (COSSA). Services are provided at our recipient, Children’s Orthopaedic and Scoliosis Surgery Associates clinics in the Tampa Bay area. Surgeries are performed at affiliated hospitals such as Johns Hopkins All Children Hospital and St. Joseph Children’s Hospital. Grants and financial assistance for medical care will only be available to current COSSA patients residing within our standard 19-county catchment area in Florida. This limitation ensures that we can provide sustainable, high-quality care for our existing patient community and address the needs of families within our practice’s established geographic scope.
